Ski ski ski...

First I’ll apologize to all the climbers who read this blog, as winter has finally hit Finland and I reckon there will be more updates about snow related stuff then climbing. Of course if something amazing in my training happens I will give you an update, but I don’t think my level will jump to 8a anytime soon.

Last Saturday we spent the day at Messilä, yeah I know it not Chamonix neither is it Lyngen or Narvik, but still it’s a place we you can go down and just ski. I had a talk with a couple of friends the other week and they kind of gave me shit about me being so psyched about these tiny little hills, as they were going to Chamonix etc… But I have a different kind of view about these places, and I think it’s easy to compare it to climbing.

Messilä afterski

We all love to climb outside, I don’t think there’s anything better, okay skiing is better, but anyway even if we still love climbing outside, a lot of us climb indoors as well. Why? Because we want to train for the outdoor season, and bring all that new power and technique on the boulders. The same thing with skiing, if you can land a jump from a kicker well it’s so much easier to have the courage and skills to land a drop in the backcountry. All those days spent in a park or a crapy slope is still training for something bigger, yeah you can’t really learn how to ski deep pow on these slopes but it definitely helps a lot.

I’ve been out five days this season, and I feel this will be the best season of my life out at the backcountry and also in the park. I’ve finally found a ski that suites me, it’s a bit shorter then recommended for somebody with my height, but at the same time it’s a bit wider what I usually have used. I’ve also bought a pair of park skis that I’ll take out the next time, hopefully tomorrow.

By the way, people who actually read this, could you drop a comment at the end, as I am a bit interested who read this, and also if there is something you want me to write about don’t hesitate to suggest it. Peace out.

  4. I will be writing about my Rocklands training during the winter months, but now it's more about training my core strength by riding the park scene.
